The pigment is a coloring substance, from the Latin pigmentum (coloring matter). Its role is to bring color and opacity to the pictorial layer.

The pigments used in painting or for coloring a medium have various origins: they can be classified into two chemical groups (mineral or organic pigments), divided into two subgroups (natural or synthetic pigment). They are also used in food, textile industry, pharmacology etc ...

• Mineral pigments are extracted from natural rock (lapis-lazuli, ocher, earth) or synthetically made from metal oxides (cobalt, cadmium). Their colors are close to those of nature.

• Organic pigments come from natural sources, animal (bone, sepia) or vegetable (indigo, cinnabar), or artificially constituted of carbon bonds, their shades are bright, colorful and often translucent. Synthetic pigments: are non-toxic and environmentally safe. They have been developed to obtain a color chart with rich and sustained colors.

They offer good resistance to UV rays, are more concentrated than natural earths and require less pigments to obtain the desired color. They dissolve in water, natural oils, oil or water glazes, waxes, oil or water paints, milk paint base, resins, acrylic binder, plaster, cement and lime plasters and much more.

USE :Attention to the compatibility of the pigments with respect to the various binders (example with lime)Dilute the pigments in a little water before incorporating them into a water-based binder.Dilute the pigments with alcohol, turpentine or glycerine before incorporating them in an oil binder and mix well until a homogeneous and perfectly smooth tint is obtained, then incorporate your color into your entire binder.

The good dispersion of the pigment is very important, it is often done with hot water or for certain pigments (the most volatile: artificial organic) with a few drops of colorless dishwasher or with glycerineGrinding improves pigment color performance.

Good creation!
